Chronicle of My Failure at the Claim Could Not Work the Hard Clays

When I found something that made reasonable sense to sample in bulk, I couldn't do it because the clays involved would not break up in the highbanker. I was glad for the GoldHog clay claw attachment, but that only helped with the low grade stuff I first took out, in the seven buckets. The harder, and richer, clays couldn't be worked. For a single pan, you crush stuff pretty well with your fingers. It releases enough to get an idea. I got good gold in the pan. I got nothing in the highbanker. I couldn't get the clay to break up in the hopper. The clay claw was good at holding it back, until the clay pieces got small enough. Then, they just shed off of the grizzly. It would not break in the way that would release the gold I had found in the test pan! I should, also, have panned all along the original low grade stuff I took out, in the seven buckets. It might not be so low grade if all 5 or 6 flakes all came from the same spot! I didn't check for that, only a single test pan from immediately adjacent to the old dredging hole. Nothing at all in that one. I had to leave both of my pans in there because they were way too awkward to get to stay strapped onto the back of the pack. They would constantly be falling off. I hauled the highbanker out, and left the motor at the claim. I have a log built place where I can keep stuff. I keep the five gallon buckets there. I left the wheelbarrow propped there as well, instead of against a nearby tree. That way, the handles will stay in better condition. No matter how securely I place it, I seem to always find the wheelbarrow on its side. The handles take more of a beating when they soak up so much moisture from the snow. I was glad to have been able to run the highbanker down to out of gas. I didn't have much gas with me anyway, but it means I can just go in with a shovel in future. Not having left my much more valuable highbanker at the claim, I can much more cheaply replicate the pump and hoses to use it outside of the claim, than I could replace what the highbanker can do for me. But in future, I am ready at the claim without carb problems. All I have to do is bring in the highbanker. My agreement is spread across five years. That will give me a year to see if I can figure the hard clays out. I may want to use the highbanker somewhere else during that time. It was a bitch getting everything out. The weight of the gas I hadn't used, though not much if I was going to try and fill the highbanker, was still heavy enough. I slung the cans with bungees onto the back of my pack. I carried the highbanker off of the shovel, like a hobo pole. It took me six hours to get to the truck. Along the way, I picked up the empty six gallon water can I had stashed at Bumpity Park. I was so glad to have finally had a vehicle that could drive in, to the end where the old road I walked out on is closed to motor vehicle traffic. People used to go four wheeling back there, but its been closed since before my dad and I had our previous claim. I use the old road to get heavy things especially into the claim. Where I couldn''t find it, I did my best. I made a way where I could take my supply cart. In the past, when I didn't have a vehicle that could drive in all the way, my walk out would have been another two miles! It's flatter, except for that first hill getting out from right by the closure. All wheel drive need not apply. People who thought their all wheel rather than true 4low could make it have gotten stuck at the foot of that hill. I tapped the oil pan of the Escape I used to own between the end of the road and where I used to park. Thankfully, it leaked at a rate where I could make it home. So when dad told me not to dredge in the road, it was out of respect for the old road, for its organizing principles. It was the same sort of respect that made him consider crossing too much private land ruled out Beaver Creek, and made Vail Mountain his obvious first choice for development. In other words he brought the ideas of both Vail and Beaver Creek to the table, not only Vail when he came to see if Pete would listen to him. Mom tells me that dad had run into some trouble with the Burfords, who had a ranch to one side of Beaver Creek, which he used to help him scout the mountain in the deep way back of time. That hassle, and his respect for whatever situation he found himself in that had so soured him on that greater amount of private land being anything like easy, is why you think Vail, not Beaver Creek. Because they could have spent the original one and a half million buying much of that private land. A single gondola could, then, have been built, along with one lift taking people from the halfway point back to the top. Vail, but with better real estate prospects!! They would only have had to get enough investors to see the natural ski mountain that Beaver Creek is. They would have had to get them to believe. And get easements during the in-between.
