The building was created in 1910-1912 on the money that a famous sugar magnate in Kiev, a Jew Lazar Brodskiy, left by his will. The market was opened on July 3, 1912.The name of the market dates back to Bessarabia region, liberated from Turkish rule by the Russian Empire during the Russian-Turkish wars and located partly in present-day Ukraine in Odessa region. Today the building of the market is a commune property. According to the opinions of native inhabitants and tourists the Bessarabian market is considered to be the most expensive market in Kiev. Idioms "expensive as on Bessarabka," or "we're not on Bessarabka" (within the meaning of the "bargaining irrelevant") have become part of the daily lives of people in Kiev. It’s been 90 years that the Bessarabian market has been serving to the people of Kiev and its guests.
