In 1856, a large band of native warriors from allied tribes of the Pacific Northwest waged an attack on the small settlement of Seattle. The attack was in response to the U.S. Governments breaking of The Medicine Creek Treaty of 1854, which many of them had lost vast portions of their traditional tribal lands. The warriors, from tribes like the Nisqually, the Pallyup, the Walla Walla, the Klickitat, the Spokane, the Palus and the Yakama, believed that they were attacking the town at it’s weakest, when it had little in the way of formal military defenses, and the primary Naval vessel, a ship named the USS Decatur, was temporarily disabled with damage caused after striking a reef. They had intended to turn the tide of U.S. expansion, and reclaim their lands for good. But what they had anticipated to be a great victory, quickly devolved into a massive defeat, as the Marines, Sailors and militia men of Seattle- in combination with the cannons of the USS Decatur- managed to thwart the attack, and save the town from being overrun. But the tragedy for the native peoples of the Pacific Northwest would not end here. In the weeks and months to come, one of their greatest chiefs, a Nisqually leader by the name of Leschi, would be apprehended on the orders of local governor Isaac Stevens. What followed would be recorded by many contemporary observers- American and native alike- as legal murder. The Battle Of Seattle was a turning point in the history of the United States, as well as the histories of the Native Tribes of the Pacific Northwest.
