My friend Lucas invited me to join him to take on a 5km swim for Fairy Bricks, a charity that raises funds to brighten the lives of sick children through Lego, as part of their July 2016 'virtual 5k' fundraising challenge. This was the furthest distance that I have ever swum in a single swimming session and for Lucas it was twice the distance he has ever taken on, whether in training or otherwise. Even more astonishing, Lucas is relatively new to swimming, so this was some achievement. The final kilometre was pretty painful for him, especially with the onset of some cramp, but he brilliantly battled through it. Our friends Pam and Katy joined us as adjudicators to verify the length count, keep time checks, post real-time updates to social media and generally support us and keep our spirits high. Swimming in a pool can be fairly dull at the best of times, but 200 lengths of a 25m pool, staring at the same nondescript floor is pretty mind-numbing. As an athletic challenge, though, it was a lot of fun and all for a great cause. You can find out more about the work of Fairy Bricks at http://fairybricks.org/. Total Fitness in Willerby, Hull kindly donated a swimming lane for our exclusive use during the challenge, and also allowed us to raise funds during the event and place promotional charity material in their fitness centre. Many thanks go to them for this.
