Including bandhas in the practice of yoga aims to lock the prana (life energy) in particular areas of the body in order to redirect them to Sushumna Nadi (the central energy channel in the body) for spiritual awakening. The bandhas regulate the flow of prana (life force) within subtle energy channels (nadis). Bandhas are a series of internal energy gates, or centers within the subtle body, which assist in the regulation and direction of pranic flow. When engaging in locks (holding the bandhas), energy is forced to flow through a specific pathway. There are 4 bandhas: Mula bandha, Uddiyana bandha, Jalandhara bandha and Maha bandha.
