Ngi mintakh po Andy. Khyang chine yo? Hello! My name is Andy. How are you? Let's talk about the Balti language. Balti (language) — Balti (بلتی; Tibetan: སྦལ་ཏི།) is a Tibetic (Bodish) language of the Ladakhi–Balti subgroup, spoken natively in the Baltistan region such as Skardu, Shigar, Ghanche, Roundu, Kharmang) of Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan, and in neighbouring parts of Ladakh (Kargil, Nubra, some villages near Leh), with diaspora communities in Pakistani cities. It preserves a number of consonants from Old Tibetan and shows a simple pitch-accent pattern in multisyllabic words. Today Balti is most commonly written with a Perso-Arabic–based orthography, though there are efforts to revive or use a Tibetan-based “Yige” orthography; Yousuf Hussain Abadi created additional letters in the 1980s, some of which were accepted into Unicode. Ethnologue describes Balti as a stable indigenous language used as a first language in the community. Wikipedia lists about 425,000 native speakers in Pakistan and about 438,800 total users worldwide, which implies about 13,800 speakers outside Pakistan. Balti people and culture — The Balti are a Tibetic ethnic group indigenous to Baltistan (a high-altitude region of the Karakoram and Himalayas centred on Skardu) and to parts of Ladakh. Historically they practised Bön and Buddhism before converting to Islam mainly through Sufi missionaries between the 14th and 17th centuries. Today the population is overwhelmingly Muslim, with Twelver Shia, Nurbakhshi (Noorbakhshia) Sufi, and Sunni communities present. Balti culture retains clear Tibetan-derived elements such as festivals (e.g., Mayfung/Losar), sword dances, folk music, and traditional dress, while also showing Central and South Asian influences. Livelihoods are based on high-altitude agriculture (barley, fruits such as apricots), pastoralism, and trade. Mayfung, a fire festival celebrated on 21 December, is one widely reported living tradition. Welcome to my channel! This is Andy from I love languages.
