Crothers Woods is a 52-hectare (≈128-acre) woodland located in the Don River Valley in Toronto, Ontario. The forest is classified as a mature maple-beech-oak woodland, hosting a number of tree species more than a century old. It has been designated an Environmentally Significant Area (ESA) due to its ecological value and relatively undisturbed nature. Trail Network & Characteristics The trail network consists of approximately 9–10 km of natural-surface (dirt) trails, many of which are narrow and multi-use (hikers, trail runners, mountain bikers). There is also a more beginner-friendly granular surfaced trail called the “Sun Valley Trail” (~1.3 km long, 2.5 m wide) within the woods, around a restored landfill site. Terrain: Some steep sections, especially where the ravine drops down toward the Don River; in spring/autumn the trails can be muddy. What to Expect & Trail Highlights You’ll walk through dense forest canopy, under mature trees (maple, beech, oak, some black walnut, hemlock) and pass by meadows and wetlands in parts. Along sections, you’ll get views of the Don River and glimpses of the Toronto skyline from higher or cleared points. Wildlife and vegetation: The woods are home to rare tree species (e.g., butternut), understory wildflowers (e.g., trillium, trout lily) and many bird species (including red-tailed hawks) thanks to the natural habitat. Historical context: Parts of the woods were formerly industrial (brick making, landfill) and have since been rehabilitated into natural space. Access & Practical Info One of the popular trailheads: Parking at the large lot of the supermarket located at 11 Redway Road off Millwood Road, which gives access to the trail network. The trails are year-round open, though condition varies with weather (mud, ice, narrow paths) and may require caution. Because the trails are multi-use, if you’re hiking you should keep alert for cyclists and runners. Some trails are narrow and shared. For families with young children or stroller use: Some sections are less suitable (narrow dirt single-track, steep parts) though the more beginner-friendly trail (Sun Valley) is more accessible. Suitable For & Tips Great for: nature walks, trail running, mountain biking, dog walking, birding, and getting into nature without leaving the city. Bring appropriate footwear: the dirt trails can be slippery or muddy in wetter seasons. Map or GPS advisable: the network of trails is extensive and intertwined; it’s possible to get turned around. Be mindful of shared-use etiquette: yield to cyclists (or be aware of them) and keep dogs under control. Time of visit: early morning or weekday may give more tranquillity; otherwise the trail sees decent use. Summary Crothers Woods offers a surprisingly rich and varied nature escape inside urban Toronto: mature forest, winding trails, river views, ecological interest, and a trail network that can be tailored to a short loop or longer exploration. It strikes a nice balance between accessible and wild — accessible in terms of location, but wild enough in feel once you’re on the trails.
