Apoorva Singh is a Fulbright–Nehru Doctoral Fellow and PhD researcher at IISc Bangalore, specializing in perovskite solar cells. With 7+ years in third-generation photovoltaics, he focuses on device engineering and electrical characterization of perovskite tandem cells. His international collaborations include research at UMass Amherst on wide-bandgap perovskites for silicon tandems, and he's pioneered noise spectroscopy techniques for perovskite characterization in India. This conversation is my attempt to understand the reality behind the hype—and to inspire young Indians to consider materials science research. As India accelerates its solar energy transition, we need more scientists working on breakthrough technologies like perovskites. This episode is for students curious about research, for anyone wondering what scientists actually do in labs, and for those excited by the future of clean energy. My hope is simple: that a young person watches this and thinks, “I want to work on this.” ⏱️ CHAPTERS 0:00 - Intro 2:08 - The Cosmic Origins of Solar Energy 14:24 - Solar Energy 101: Abundance and History 15:41 - Why Solar is Expensive 22:04 - Three Generations of Solar Cells 32:35 - How Solar Cells Work 43:51 - Perovskite: The 2009 Revolution 1:02:37 - The Magic of Band Gap Tuning 1:09:45 - Perovskite Stability Challenges 1:31:39 - Tandem Cells: Breaking the Limits 1:37:02 - Why Perovskite Changes Everything 1:47:19 - The Daily Grind: What Research Actually Looks Like 2:01:01 - The Global Race: Who's Winning? 2:07:58 - The Startup Thought Experiment 2:24:08 - Lab Tour 🤝 Collaborations & Sponsorships If you’re a scientist, researcher, or lab working on something meaningful and would like your work documented—reach out.
