Errollyn Wallen CBE is a British composer, born in Belize in 1958. Her family moved to London in 1960, when she was two. Her music draws on a wide range of influences, including avant-garde classical music as well as popular songwriting. She believes that there are no music boundaries to be broken down, "because there aren't any". I'd venture to suggest that the vast majority of my Subscribers would say "hear hear!" to that sentiment. Paintings I. The Blind Leading the Blind, (or The Parable of the Blind) is a painting by the Netherlandish Renaissance artist Pieter Bruegel the Elder, completed in 1568. Executed in distemper on linen canvas. It depicts the Biblical parable of the blind leading the blind from the Gospel of Matthew 15:14, "Let them alone: they be blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch." In this case, Bruegel's depiction is very literal, as the leader of a procession of six blind men has fallen into a ditch and seems sure to drag his fellows down with him. It is in the collection of the Museo di Capodimonte in Naples, Italy. The painting reflects Bruegel's mastery of observation. Each figure has a different eye affliction, including corneal leukoma, atrophy of globe and removed eyes. The men hold their heads aloft to make better use of their other senses. The diagonal composition reinforces the off-kilter motion of the six figures falling in progression. It is considered a masterwork for its accurate detail and composition. Copies include a larger version by Bruegel's son Pieter Brueghel the Younger, and the work has inspired literature such as poetry by Charles Baudelaire and William Carlos Williams, and a novel by Gert Hofmann. Bruegel painted The Blind the year before his death. II. Gassed, is a very large oil painting completed in March 1919 by American expatriate artist John Singer Sargent. It depicts the aftermath of a mustard gas attack during the First World War, with a line of wounded soldiers walking towards a dressing station. Sargent's painting refers to Bruegel's 1568 work (cited above) The Parable of the Blind, with the blind leading the blind, and it also alludes to Rodin's Burghers of Calais.
