Moses continues his second major speech, shifting from historical review to urgent exhortation: Love God totally, teach the next generation, and remember His miracles—lest you forget and fall into idolatry. These chapters form the heart of the Shema and Israel’s core identity. Chapter 6: The Shema – Love God with Everything The Greatest Commandment: “Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, soul, and strength” (6:4–5). Teach Diligently: Impress these words on your children—talk about them at home, on the road, morning and night. Bind them on hands/forehead, write on doorposts (origin of mezuzot and tefillin). Warning Against Forgetting: When you enter the land, eat well, and prosper—do not forget the LORD who brought you out of Egypt. Fear only Him, serve Him, do not test Him (as at Massah). Destroy Idols: Tear down Canaanite altars to avoid God’s wrath. Chapter 7: Holy People, Holy War Chosen for Love, Not Merit: God chose Israel not because they were great, but because He loved them and keeps His covenant with Abraham. No Compromise with Canaanites: Completely destroy the 7 nations (Hittites, etc.). No intermarriage, no covenants—or their gods will be a snare. God’s Power, Not Yours: He’ll drive them out little by little (to prevent wild animals overrunning). Burn their idols; take no silver/gold lest you be ensnared. Blessings for Obedience: Health, fertility, victory—if you obey. Chapter 8: Remember the Wilderness 40 Years of Testing: God humbled Israel in the desert—manna to teach “man lives by every word from God’s mouth” (8:3, quoted by Jesus). Danger of Pride: When you’re full, live in fine houses, and herds multiply—do not say, “My power got me this”. Remember the LORD. Consequence of Forgetting: If you forget and worship other gods, you will perish like the nations God is displacing. Chapter 9: Not Because of Your Righteousness Israel Is Stubborn: “Stiff-necked” people—don’t think you’re entering the land because you’re good. It’s because of Canaan’s wickedness and God’s promise to Abraham. Golden Calf Recap: At Horeb, Israel made the calf 40 days after the covenant. Moses interceded, fasting 40 days/nights twice, smashing tablets, and praying God wouldn’t destroy them. Other Rebellions: Taberah, Massah, Kibroth Hattaavah, Kadesh Barnea (spies)—proof Israel provoked God repeatedly. Chapter 10: New Tablets and God’s Mercy Second Set of Tablets: God tells Moses to cut two new stones; He rewrites the Ten Commandments. Ark is made; tablets placed inside. Levites’ Role: Aaron dies; Levites chosen to carry the ark, serve, and bless in God’s name—no land inheritance, God is their portion. What God Requires: “Fear the LORD, walk in His ways, love Him, serve with heart and soul, keep commands—for your good.” God of Gods: He’s sovereign, loves the orphan/widow/foreigner—so must Israel. Final Appeal: Circumcise your hearts; stop being stubborn.
