Yep, those are four different high-scoring awards I got in one game of Taxi. It's not a wise idea to go for all four, which is why I struggled so much in this one. Taxi is actually normally one of my strongest tables in Pinball Arcade. (I personally focus on Jackpot and Million.) Taxi was released in 1988, two years after PIN•BOT. By then, Python Anghelo had become comfortable, and Taxi is a good example of the whimsy that he was quite fond of. For instance, almost every cab on the playfield has something unusual on it, whether it's a giraffe or an apple tree. Have you noticed that the Williams "W" is on the hubcaps? His fondness for the absurd carries over into the premise too. In Taxi, your task is to pick up passengers and bring them to their destination. The passengers, however, are quite the bizarre lot: Pin•Bot (which is why I put up a video of PIN•BOT prior to this one—so you can understand the references), Count Dracula, Mikhail Gorbachev (called "Gorbie"), Santa Claus, and a woman named Lola. Lola was originally named Marilyn and was intended to be a lawyer-friendly Marilyn Monroe, but even "Marilyn" was too close, and they had to change her name and her hair color. Anghelo hated the Soviet government with a fiery passion, and he sometimes made jabs at the USSR's leaders like Gorbachev by portraying them doing mundane things...like riding a taxi. Also, take a look at this video's thumbnail. That's more artwork from Anghelo. Notice the Williams "W" reappearing as the taxi's hood ornament and that Gorbie's necktie has a hammer-and-sickle pattern. This table was designed by Mark Ritchie, but I'll explain him later; I should talk about his more prolific brother Steve first. The rules in Taxi are simple enough that I think they make a good introduction to people about pinball rules. The most obvious thing to do is pick up passengers, and the game will tell you what to do next. Flashing passengers mean they're ready to be picked up, and you must pick them all up before dropping them off. The characters are picked up as follows: Santa - Shoot the upper-left scoop from below. Gorbie - Shoot the upper-left scoop from the right. (The game can tell.) Lola - Hit the 3 drop targets in the middle within 10 seconds or they pop back up. Dracula - Shoot the lower-left scoop. Pin•Bot - Hit the 3 drop targets on the right within 16 seconds or they pop back up. When you begin a game, Gorbie and Pin•Bot will be ready for pickup. Pick either of them up, and Dracula will then be available. Once you have two passengers, Lola becomes available, and with your third pickup, Santa will be ready. Once you've picked up all five passengers, the Gorbie shot will be lit for the Jackpot for 10 seconds. If you can make that shot, you'll score the Jackpot beginning at 500,000 points and increased via the pop bumpers, and the passengers will be dropped off and you can begin again, though they'll be in a different order next time, and only one will be ready at a time. If time runs out, Lola will leave the taxi, and you must pick her up again to restart the Jackpot. Also, if you drain the ball, you'll have to start over unless Carry Passengers is active, which is obtained by finishing either bank of drop targets (the passenger doesn't need to be available) and shooting the red target next to the top scoop within the next 17 seconds. If you can get the Spinout to land on "25 Thousand" (the purple space), you will pick up an available passenger right away. That's why my plunges were so weird. And yes, on this table, when they say Jackpot, they mean it. It's not like other tables, with jackpots given out like candy on Halloween with Double Jackpots and Triple Jackpots and Super Jackpots. Taxi has a 2-ball multiball. To do so, lock a ball at the lower-right scoop next to Pin•Bot. The game will feed you another ball, and multiball begins the next time you shoot the left ramp. Once multiball begins, the Express Lane begins too. Dunk a ball back into that scoop to get Express Lane 1, then put the other ball into the Dracula scoop for Express Lane 2 and an Express Lane Bonus worth 300,000 points. During multiball, the Crossover Bonus is always available: Get one ball on the left ramp and another on the right ramp at about the same time such that they narrowly miss each other at the intersection for 250,000 points. The last huge source of points is Million. If you can get the ball down the left inlane and immediately to the right ramp, or the right inlane straight to the left ramp, you'll score an Airport Ride that increases in value. The 6th one is worth 0 but lights Million at the upper-left scoop. Shoot it like you would Santa to get 1,000,000 points. The next table will be Creature from the Black Lagoon. This is another table that gets referenced in a bunch of later tables.
