Watch in 8K if your bandwidth can handle it. We finally got a chance to go and test out our new Red Epic-W. I certainly wouldn't call this a test though, as this was the first time we were able to go out and shoot something, so more like an introduction and really just playing around. We learned quite a bit from this. Like how important it is to set up proper blackshades for the higher shutter speeds. There was some 2K 300fps footage that had too much noise to use in this little cut. I'm pretty certain I will be able to get rid of the noise in some of these shots as well when I calibrate at the right temperatures and for the right exposures. This was mostly shot at 8K FF, with some 6K WS to get 100fps with 2K ProRes LT as proxies for editing. I finished this film in 8K so had to upscale all the slow mo, but so far really surprised with how easy the workflow was on my Mid 2010 MacPro. Rendering and uploading to youtube was a different story though! About 3-4 hours to cut, about 4-5 hours to render as ProRes 422 at 8K and more than 12 hours to upload to youtube (a lot of this time was youtube having to process all the different file size flavours) Decided to add a simple moody grade on this, next time I will grade something that can really show of the natural colours and saturation. The dynamic range of this camera is just incredible. Hopefully we will get a better hang of the workflow required to really make these images pop. Hit us up if you have any questions or suggestions.
