When I first listened to the CDP502ES I was instantly reminded of the famous Marantz 63 KI. There was that same organic musicality that made the Marantz great, but the Sony actually gives more than that. This is a genuine step up from the Marantz. The bottom end detail and power of the Sony really is exceptional and reminded me of the Wadia I owned some years ago. Wadia's were always revered for their bottom end and the Sony definitively has that same quality and power, which really drives the music along. Detail is also a level up from the Marantz KI and the overall balance of the sound really is very impressive. This beautiful player is renowned for its specs, sound and robust build quality. It sounds dynamic, true and accurate. The highs are smooth and sweet. The mids are natural and warm analogue sounding!!!! When I took the top cover off to lubricate and clean the mechanism I found that Sony designers look like they've stolen a trick from Marantz (Ken Ishiwata) as they have followed their lead by copper plating chassis components. Internally this is very nicely made machine. The draw opening mechanism is beautifully engineered and light years ahead of the old Marantz. This technically advanced machine features extremely robust build quality and components seldom if ever equaled; copper-plated chassis, copper bus bars, abundant heat-sinking, LC-OFC wiring, GIC low-pass filter, Nichicon MUSE, ELNA For Audio caps and very solid and long lasting overall assembly. The d/a section inside the CDP-502ES is all-Sony, ending with 16-bit CX-20152. There are 5 or 6 versions of the BU drive, the first of which came with this generation of Sony. The BU mechanism/drive doesn't look exactly like those in the later X7/x77 players but the system is the same : magnetic linear rails, super-fast movements and, again, very long life. Includes the full complement of controls and features one would expect on a high-end unit like this.
