#folk_music Album/Single/EP : Cliffs Garefowl is a project marking two anniversaries connected to the archipelago of St Kilda, which lies in the Atlantic Ocean 50 miles west of the Outer Hebrides: 180 years since the last Great Auk (or “garefowl” as they were called in St Kilda) in the UK was killed there, and 90 years since the inhabitants were evacuated in 1930. Ewan Macdonald (The Idumea Quartet, Band of Burns, Root and Branch) and his father Murdo - relatives of one of the men who killed the great auk, Lachlan MacKinnon - conceived the project to reflect on and mark this family history. Garefowl is made up of an international collective of musicians brought together by Ewan. The album contains five immersive instrumental interpretations of traditional St Kildan songs sourced from archive recordings and manuscript collections, alongside three modern tunes written on or about St Kilda. While intimately connected with one specific location - St Kilda - the story of the great auk’s extinction and the subsequent human evacuation of the island, in part due to the ravages of the infant tetanus virus, have a universal resonance in our age of environmental and medical uncertainty. All recording was completed during the Coronavirus lockdown, with musicians collaborating remotely.
