It was created by Harvey Kurtzman as the comic book Tales Calculated to Drive You MAD in 1952 for William Gaines' EC Comics. When the Comics Code Authority began in 1955, MAD switched to a Magazine format. In 2019 MAD ceased newsstand distribution buth it continues to be published by DC Comics bi-monthly and is available at your local comic dealer. Mad's many cultural contributions include the iconic Alfred E. Neuman, Antonio Prohías' Spy vs. Spy, Al Jaffee's MAD Fold-in, Sergio Aragones' A MAD Look At, Dave Berg's The Lighter Side Of, and the artwork and writing of many wonderful talents such as Wally Wood, Bill Elder, Jack Davis, Mort Drucker, Don Martin, Frank Jacobs, Tom Richmond, Peter Kuper, and many, MANY more.
