Breaking news! Raptor 2 will soon disappear this year, and Raptor 3 is ready to shine like never before! When it first launched, Elon Musk promised that Raptor 2 would shake up the space industry with its power and reliability. But as often happens, reality doesn’t always match expectations. The engine has faced some technical setbacks that have held back Starship's progress. So, what went wrong with Raptor 2? Could Raptor 3 be the ultimate solution to the challenges faced by Raptor 2? Let's dive into all of it on today's episode of Alpha Tech. SpaceX's Genius Solution to Solve Raptor 2 Problems after Ship 35 Anomaly... When SpaceX officially introduced Raptor 2 back in February 2022, Elon Musk didn’t hold back. On stage and on X, he presented it as a next-gen leap, sleeker design, smarter manufacturing, more thrust, better ISP, a clear upgrade over Raptor 1 in every possible way. But nearly two years later, reality has been far from perfect. While Raptor 2 has certainly played a key role in test flights and provided valuable data for the development of both Starship and Raptor Version 3, it hasn’t been without its challenges. Earlier this year, Starship Flights 7 and 8 experienced minor anomalies linked to Raptor 2. And during a static fire test on May 1st, a Raptor Vacuum engine encountered an unexpected issue, prompting SpaceX to delay Flight 9. SpaceX's Genius Solution to Solve Raptor 2 Problems after Ship 35 Anomaly... So, what’s really happening with this "improved" engine? First, let’s talk about the kind of Raptor problems most people barely notice, starting with Starship Flight 1. Right at liftoff, three Raptor engines failed to ignite, likely due to a pre-launch issue, so Starship lifted off with just 30 of 33 engines running. About 27 seconds in, SpaceX lost contact with several more engines after what they called an “energetic event.” That engine trouble led to a loss of thrust vector control on 13 center engines, making it impossible for Starship to stay stable. In the end, the onboard Flight Termination System had to shut it down. === Subcribe Alpha Tech: / @alphatech4966 ===
