This black and white film is one of the episodes of "Yesterday's Newsreels", an early 1950s TV show made from the General Newsreel collection. It features nine segments of historic highlights. 1917-1923 Sarah Bernhardt. French actress Sarah Bernhardt handles a firearm. Her death in 1923 is attended by orphans. Her casket passes in front of her only child Maurice and then passes through the streets of Paris in a processional of carriages covered in flowers (:40-2:22). 1926 Bucky Harris Marries. Washington Senators’ second baseman Bucky Harris marries Elizabeth Sutherland, the daughter of Senator Sutherland from West Virginia. President and Mrs. Calvin Coolidge are shown in attendance. Their wedding cake is in the shape of a giant baseball, with a baseball player and ballerina figurines on top (2:25-3:00). 1916 WWI London Blitz! A Royal Flying Corps pilot fires at a German zeppelin. Inside the airship next to the driver, a passenger lights a small bomb with a cigarette to drop on the London homes below. Roof damage is shown. Police officers hold up small bombs that failed to explode. A building collapsed from the shock of the blast. Bicycle brigades and citizens practice military drills (3:03-4:25). 1928 Personalities. Mexico President General Alvaro Obregon attends a party with William McAdoo, Secretary of the Treasury under President Wilson. Shortly afterwards, Obregon was assassinated (4:30-4:53). Film and Broadway actress Constance Binney sells poppies in front of the New York Library during WWI (4:54-5:00). Stage actress Grace La Rue sells a poppy to dancer and actor Clifton Webb (5:01-5:17). English actor Delfino Lane smiles for the camera. He is shown in makeup for one of his comedic roles (5:18-5:35). March 13, 1928 Flash Flood in California. Water pours through St. Francis Valley. Men lead a horse through the flooded waters after the collapse of the St. Francis Dam. Heavily damaged homes are shown; rescuers search for survivors. Now homeless people are fed. A bridge and mangled vehicles shows how damaging flood waters can be (5:38-7:42). 1919-1942 Seaworthy Autos. A 1919 Gloria Motors water-powered vehicle has a steel door, watertight axle housing, rudder, and propeller. Moving through the water, a passenger holds up a fish he just caught. Du-13, an amphibious transport DUKW, drives ashore in 1942 (7:45-8:35). June 1930 Aviation. The Hunter brothers set an endurance airplane flight record, using two Stinson SM-1 Detroiters as refueler and receiver (refueling in flight is shown). The crowds welcome them to land (8:37-9:38). 1921 Fashions of the Day. Models wear flannel dresses with wraparound capes. Another wears a black satin corset with stockings and white shoes. A bride enters in a chiffon calf-length bridal gown, followed by her bridesmaids. 1926, Louise Clair is named “America’s Loveliest Girl” showcases a bobbed wavy hairstyle (9:41-10:59). Sports. 1922, Billiards champion Welker Cochran chalks his cue stick and performs trick shots (11:02-11:49). 1923, speed skater Joe Moore’s shirt says “181st Ice Palace” as he races at the Middle Atlantic Skating competition (11:50-12:19).
