EXTREMELY RARE USAF E-11 BATTLEFIELD AIRBORNE COMMUNICATIONS NODE (BACN) • RAF MILDENHALL

This is an E-11A Battlefield Airborne Communications Node (BACN) and it is about to depart RAF Mildenhall, Suffolk using runway 28. This aircraft is known as ‘Wi-Fi in the sky’ due to its ability to serve as a low earth satellite. The E-11 is operated by the US Air Force’s 430th Expeditionary Electronic Communications Squadron, which is responsible for providing communication coverage to ground and air forces in active combat zones. There are not many around which makes this an extremely rare aircraft. It is a modified Bombardier Global Express 6000/BD700-1A10 business jet and started life with civilian registration back in 1996. The aircraft served as the RAF’s Sentinel R1 airborne battlefield and ground surveillance platform, before being acquired by Northrop Grumman after its withdrawal by the RAF. The E-11A serves as a high-altitude communication relay platform that translates and distributes imagery in real time, voice and tactical data among incompatible communications systems.
