In the heart of St. David's Medical Center in Austin, Texas, a remarkable volunteer named Lyn Harris, a Vietnam veteran, spends six hours a week cuddling the tiniest patients in the hospital's NICU. His story is one of dedication, compassion, and making a difference in the lives of babies and their families. Lyn has been an integral part of the St. David's Medical Center community for the past 15 years, offering his time and warmth to those in need. While he initially began volunteering at the hospital's front desk, it was in the NICU that he discovered his true calling a few years ago. "Doing this, it's just been very, very rewarding," Lyn shares, highlighting the joy he finds in providing comfort to the little ones in the NICU. Research emphasizes the importance of regular human touch for infant development, making Lyn's cuddling sessions not just heartwarming but also beneficial for these tiny souls. "We help them out. We help the nurses out. And it's just a good situation. If we can do it, if I can do it, if I can help someone out like that, I enjoy doing it," Lyn says, underscoring the positive impact he strives to make. The impact goes beyond the babies; it extends to the parents who navigate the emotional rollercoaster of having a child in the NICU. Sydney and Matt Malcolm, parents of 12-week-old Micah, express their gratitude for the extra love Lyn provides when they can't be there 24/7. "As much as you would love to be here 24/7, you know, it's just not possible. So for us, it's been super comforting knowing that there are people like Lyn who can give your baby a little bit of extra love when you're not here," Sydney shares. Lyn's involvement is part of a symphony of care that surrounds these little ones, from doctors and nurses to cleaning crews and fellow volunteers. "From the doctors to the nurses to the cleaning crew and the volunteers, it's been a very eye-opening experience. I'm just so thankful that there's everyone here," Sydney expresses, acknowledging the collaborative effort that supports NICU families. At the age of 80, Lyn Harris has no plans of slowing down. "I'm an old man, so I'll keep going until I can't," he laughs, highlighting his determination to continue making a difference for these babies as long as he can. His story serves as an inspiration, showcasing how a simple act of kindness can have a profound impact on the lives of those in need.
