The egg is one of the most popular symbols on Easter Sunday, but what is the connection and meaning of the Easter egg? Easter Egg Origins While some try to suggest that the Easter egg originated as pagan religious influence of Christianity, but the origin probably has a much more practical beginning. You might recall that at the beginning of Lent, the tradition was to use up all of your eggs to make pancakes on Fat Tuesday/Mardi Gras. This was because at that time, people would fast (abstain) from all meat during Lent including eggs. Today we only abstain from meat on Fridays and eggs are not included. But centuries ago, Easter Sunday marked the day when families could finally eat eggs again. So, eggs were everywhere on Easter Sunday morning! Easter Egg Symbolism & Meaning But the egg itself has it’s own symbolic meaning. Here are a few interpretations of the Easter egg and some ways that we can use eggs to teach about the Paschal Mystery: 1. Coloring Eggs - The practice of coloring eggs probably started as a way to connect the eggs to Christ’s passion and death. By coloring the eggs red, Christians could remind themselves of Christ’s suffering and death. Then on Easter Sunday, the shell is removed to reveal the holy and pure white interior. 2. Eggshells - We can also look at the hard shell of the egg like Jesus’s tomb. As the stone was rolled away from the empty tomb on Easter Sunday, so too are the shells broken and the egg poured out to reveal the emptiness inside. 3. The Trinity - Finally, while not specifically an Easter symbol, the egg can be used to teach the Trinity. God is One in Three Persons. An egg is made up of a shell, yolk, and egg whites—three in one. So too is God made up of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—three in one. Today we see Easter eggs everywhere on Easter Sunday. We have egg hunts, colored eggs, chocolate eggs, and even jelly beans to connect to the symbolism of the egg. SUBSCRIBE for more Catholic videos: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_c...
