When our children start reading in one language, we often wonder how we can make them interested in learning to read also in the other language(s). And what if these other languages are our home languages and they don't use them at school? Comic books seem to be particularly appealing to children that are emergent readers/starting to read. Yoshito Darmon-Shimamori, who founded The Library 4 Multilinguals to help parents enthuse their children on their multi-literacy journey, shares with us what makes comic books a great tool to develop our children's multi-literacy. Yoshito Darmon-Shimamori is an author for multilingual children, a secondary school language teacher, and a dad to his two trilingual sons. In 2021, he published "The Parents' Guide to Raising Multi-literate Children" to give parents concrete game ideas to make reading and write fun. He is currently working on a bilingual graphic novel to help children write in their home language, while exploring their home language and culture.
