One of the first side quests available is Bad Blood, a complex investigation involving missing persons, village tensions, and difficult choices. This guide walks through the entire quest, covering the best choices, skill checks, and alternative outcomes to ensure the most rewarding playthrough. How to Start Bad Blood To begin, return to Bozhena’s house from the game’s opening. She reveals that her daughter, Pavlena, has gone missing and pleads for help. Be mindful during the conversation—certain dialogue options (questioning her relationship with Pavlena or why the villagers dislike her) can fail skill checks early in the game, slightly lowering reputation with Bozhena. However, this does not prevent you from taking the quest. Investigating Pavlena’s Disappearance Inside Pavlena’s room, examine the cap on the stool, the wood nearby, and the target in the corner for clues. Lockpicking her chest is an option, but most players at this stage will lack the necessary skill. Next, travel to Troskowitz’s Scribe, who directs you to the woodcutters near the butcher. Speak with the woman outside the woodcutters’ house, then her husband, Dushko, who is searching for Roman, Pavlena’s lover. A persuasion skill check (Speech, Charisma, or Dread level 8+) allows you to gain more details and even secure Groschen to bribe the guards in case of trespassing. From here, investigate Roman’s house next door. While the front door is locked, the best approach is climbing the ladder to enter through the attic. Once inside, examine the table in the main room for further evidence. If your lockpicking skill is high enough, you can open a chest here as well. Tracking Pavlena & Roman Dushko eventually suggests checking a clearing by the stream, where you’ll find supplies but no Pavlena. Instead, there’s a trail of blood leading northeast. Players with Mutt can use him to track it directly, but following the blood manually also works. The trail leads to Roman’s half-buried body, confirming foul play. A nearby pig herder calls you over and reveals that a farmhand named Straw may be involved. Straw is hiding behind a barn in southern Troskowitz. Confronting Straw – Persuasion or Combat During the confrontation, Straw can be charmed, reasoned with, or threatened. If necessary, a non-lethal fight is ideal, as he surrenders after a few hits, revealing that he and his partner Ota kidnapped Pavlena. Straw acted in hopes of earning Jakesh’s favor. At this stage, you can: -Kill Straw (permanent outcome, but no major consequences). -Turn him in to the bailiff, leading to his execution. -Let him go, though this has no impact beyond roleplaying. Rescuing Pavlena Ota has taken Pavlena to a gorge south of Troskowitz. Upon arrival, you’ll see a dog guarding the ladder—kill it or climb quickly to avoid being attacked. At the top, Ota holds Pavlena hostage, leading to two possible outcomes: -Pavlena Dies – If you provoke Ota by failing to de-escalate (ignoring his concerns, failing to mention Pavlena’s pregnancy), he kills her. After defeating him, return to Bozhena, who may ask you to avenge Pavlena by killing Jakesh. -Pavlena Lives – There are several skill checks that can cause him to release Pavlena but, saying “Pavlena is pregnant.” ensures her survival. Ota releases her, but she unexpectedly kills him with his own knife. Regardless of the path, Pavlena requests you don’t tell Bozhena she’s pregnant. Resolving the Feud with Jakesh Returning to Bozhena, the conversation shifts toward Jakesh, her old adversary. The feud stems from Jakesh blaming Bozhena for his son’s death at birth and her failure to baptize the child. Several options arise: -Ignore Bozhena’s request to kill Jakesh, ending the quest. -Kill Jakesh yourself (sneaking in at night is easiest). -Threaten Jakesh – Force him to accept Bozhena’s return but keeps tensions high. -Persuade Jakesh to forgive Bozhena using dialogue options: “Pavlena is pregnant” – Best choice, guarantees peace. “Indirect guilt is still guilt” – Requires high Speech to succeed. “Revenge never ends well” – Requires high Charisma to work. If peace is made, Jakesh offers money to Bozhena. Final Thoughts on Bad Blood I found this quest to be refreshing in RPG games as well as engaging. Deciding whether Pavlena lives or dies, and whether the village feud continues or ends, is entirely up to you. This side quest should have very low impact long term.
