Parkway Place Mall, which opened as a mall in 1976, is the most successful mall in Alabama in terms of occupancy. Originally, the property opened as a strip mall all the way back in 1957, and was enclosed in 1974 after being hit by a tornado that was part of the 1974 tornado outbreak. Opening with Montgomery Ward, Pizitz and Parisian, it was the 4th mall in Huntsville to open at that point. Other malls in the city included Dunnavant's Mall, Heart of Huntsville Mall, and 'The Mall'. Later, Madison Square Mall opened, and essentially ran every other old and outdated mall out of Huntsville. Madison Square was called the "super mall" of Huntsville, and yet today is demolished and gone. Parkway City Mall was falling flat by the late 1990's, after having operated pretty decently alongside Madison Square Mall, and the failing other malls until their demises. It was then that CBL & Associates scrapped their plans to build another massive mall development in the city and announced plans to raze the old Parkway City mall and build an entirely new mall. This new two story mall opened on October 26th, 2002 and today is pretty much the most successful shopping mall in Alabama. It even managed to kill off the "super mall," Madison Square, which was larger, had more stores and anchors., but faltered due to a lifestyle center development known as Bridge Street Towne Centre not even 2 miles away, and a reputation of crime. Today Parkway Place Mall is anchored by Dillard's and Belk, and has every mall store one would expect to find at any decent mall. Most upscale stores in town are in the lifestyle center, but this mid market mall will hopefully be here for many years to come. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=--=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=--=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=--=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=--=-=-=-=-= Consider checking out the Dead Malls of Discord Server.
