Eighty-four-year-old Suharto was hospitalised two weeks ago for colon surgery and has undergone several minor operations since then. Mardjo Subiandono, the chief presidential doctor, told reporters that the ex-strongman started bleeding in the stomach again late on Monday. Another doctor, Djoko Rahardjo, added that Suharto was in a "critical phase" due to the bleeding. "We are giving him medication (to stop the bleeding)," Rahardjo told a news conference. "if that is unsuccessful, we are planning to conduct an endoscopy, which means we insert a device into his stomach, look at the inside of the stomach and locate the source of the bleeding," he said. Subiandono said Suharto looked "weak and pale." He said his lungs, heart and kidneys were functioning but the main concern was the internal bleeding. Suharto, who ruled Indonesia with an iron fist until he was ousted from power in 1998, was indicted in 2000 on charges of embezzling 600 (m) million US dollars in state funds. The country's attorney general this month said proceedings against him had been abandoned, angering critics who blame the former strongman for hundreds of thousands of deaths. There have been several small but rowdy street protests in recent days.
