A form of cysticercosis occurring in the brain. It is caused by parasitic infection larval cysts of the pork tapeworm (Taenia solium), by ingesting its eggs from contaminated food or, most often, by the fecal-oral route. It leads to seizures and can be fatal. It is a leading cause of adult onset epilepsy worldwide. Epilepsy is a central nervous system disorder in which brain activity becomes abnormal, causing seizures. The onset is most common in children and older adults. (Diagnosis) • medical history and questioning • CNS imaging: CT, MRI • serological testing (detection of antibodies against cysticerci in cerebrospinal fluid or serum): enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), Taenia solium-specific glycoprotein-based electroimmunotransfer blot (EITB) assay (Treatment) • Conventional anticonvulsant therapy for seizures. • Anthelminthic therapy (e.g. albendazole) for live (noncalcified) cysticerci. It is not beneficial with dead worms (calcified cysts). • Concomitant administration of steroids (e.g. dexamethasone) to suppress the inflammatory response induced by destruction of live cysticerci. • Surgical removal of intraventricular cysts by endoscopy if possible.
