12 March 2017 The Schil ----- If you would like to support me, I am raising money for surgery in Spain: https://gofund.me/045d82ea ----- A Simm is a hill in Great Britain or Ireland that is over 600 metres high and has a prominence of at least 30 metres. The Deweys list are hills in England or Wales over 500 metres (1,600 feet) in altitude, but below 2,000 feet (610 metres), with a prominence of at least 30 metres (98 feet). The Schil was the last Simm I had left to do in Northumberland. Also, I somehow found myself the moderator (not sure how) for The Schil on the UK Hillwalking website (https://www.ukhillwalking.com/logbook.... and as I have never visited the hill before, thought I had better. So the Met weather forecast said it was going to rain all morning and perhaps there might be a break in the afternoon with fleeting showers... so naturally that meant it was going to be sunny in Northumberland. Basically whatever the Met says is the opposite of what the weather actually does in Northumberland. So decided to head into Scotland and tackle the Cheviots from the other side of the border. This made a lot more sense for The Schil. But first I wanted to cross off a neighbouring Dewey, the Black Hag. Once I ascended the hill, I had to cross a stone wall into England to reach the summit (would've been easier to have used the Pennine Way stile and then ascend on the English side of the wall). The views were incredible... on a clear day you could probably see to Edinburgh... I could see pass Melrose on this day. Next was to follow the border wall down the hill and then follow the Pennine Way in England to the top of the Schil. Passing a small crag and a shelter stone on the way to the top. The summit has to be the best summit in the whole Cheviots. A pinnacle of rock and I bet you could fool a few people with the location by taking a photo on the top when there is snow. Although getting to it in the snow might be a bit tricky. After spending quite a bit of time at the summit waiting for a passing low cloud to leave, I headed down the other side of the Schil and up another Dewey, Birnie Brae. From here I headed to Auchope mountain rescue hut to look up what fellow youtubers had written in the book and have a spot of lunch overlooking the College Valley and Hen Hole. Andy Wardle: • A BORDER TALE UP ON THE BORDER Eddie (aka Scots Wildcamper): • Video Julie Liddle: • Cheviots wild camp birthday celebrations... I had a bit of a chat with a photographer who was out this fine morning and debated whether to do the Cheviot again and then head back down via Clennel Street and then along the road from Cocklawfoot farm... it was tempting but I worked out with the 2 hour drive back home, it would've been a late return and my daughter had school in the morning. So instead took the photographer's advice and headed down via Dod Hill (bagged it in case it was significant but it wasn't). All in all a splendid day in the Cheviots and a much needed outing after being cooped up since High Force. My route: http://gb.mapometer.com/walking/route...
