The warmer weather has seen flocks of migratory birds including national first-class protected red-crowned crane arrive at the Jingxin Wetland in Hunchun City of northeast China's Jilin Province. Bordering China, Russia and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), the Jingxin Wetland is home to flocks of wild geese. The 5,000-hectare wetland has provided abundant food for the wild geese as conches, shrimp and reeds are everywhere in the swamp. "The wetland in Hunchun is the main habitat for flocks of wild geese. Every spring and autumn, several thousands of wild geese rest here, most of which are national second-class protected greater white-fronted geese," said Wu Zhigang, a researcher at the Jilin Provincial Academy of Forestry Sciences. Compared with vibrant wild geese, another guest at the wetland, the red-crowned crane, seems to be more quiet and elegant. As a first-class protected bird in China, the number of red-crowned cranes worldwide is no more than 2,000. Around 30 red-crowned cranes migrate to the Jingxin Wetland every year. "The red-crowned cranes will take a short rest to fuel energy. Then they will continue to fly north along the Wusuli River. They will breed in areas such as Lake Khanka, the Sanjiang Plain and the coastal border in Russia," said Wu. The extraordinary scenery of migratory birds has also attracted many photographers. In order to protect the migratory birds and the wetland, the local forestry police has increased the number of patrols around the wetland while also promoting ecological civilization.
