12 GREATEST Unsolved Dinosaur Mysteries

From feathered and flying dinosaurs … to the comet that killed a lot of ‘em off … Here are 12 of the greatest unsolved dinosaur mysteries #12 Which Dino Was The First? By most accounts, that would be Nyasasaurus. But there’s still debate as to how closely related to dinosaurs they actually were. This lanky beast went about 3 meters long including the tail. Unearthed in Tanzania in the 1930s, it has been dated at around 240 million years old. Like all known dinosaurs it had bony crest located along its upper arm. But while this creature is commonly accepted as the earliest known dinosaur, subsequent discoveries could change that status. #11 What Colors Were They? Green and brown as the colors most often associated with dinosaurs … so far as popular entertainment is concerned anyway. For a long time, people modeled the color of dinos after that of modern day reptiles. Melanosomes might help provide some answers. Those are pigment bearing organelles found in the feather of a 100 million year old specimen found it China. It at least proves that the color of feathered dinosaurs could survive being fossilized. Specimens of Psittacosaurus yielded melanosomes that indicated the animal was striped and had spotted limbs. Some experts say that since no dinosaur skin has been found intact, nothing can be definitively proven (or disproven) regarding the creatures coloration. It has even been suggested that the dinos pigmentation could range from bright orange and red to pink with blue spots. Such color schemes could have served as a way for the animals to identify one another, and to attract mates. #10 Did They Hunt Like Wolves? Thanks to their depiction in Jurassic Park, a lot of us think that dinosaurs must have formed like wolf packs to chase down and catch their prey. While that was an effective choice in storytelling, there’s actually no definitive proof whether theropods like T-rex actually did join forces with other species in a coordinated strategy of taking down prey. Fossil evidence has uncovered some specimens of T rex and velociraptors evidently walking together ... but it doesn’t indicate why they may have been walking together. The only way to determine if dinos really did indulge in collaborative behavior would be to find a fossil specimen showing dinosaur tracks intercepting those of its victim … better yet, with a skeleton attached to the scuffle. Regarding how soon this mystery might be solved … well, don’t hold your breath. #9 What’s with those tiny T-rex arms? That’s a question that has puzzled many of us … how (and why) did this massive beast have such tiny arms? Some explanations include those short arms being used to help the beast rise from a resting position. However, certain experts have claimed that the animal’s forelimbs (which went around 3 feet long) might have actually served a far more lethal purpose. The arms had sharp, crescent shaped talons at the ends, which could have been used for mortally wounding its prey. Taking into account the size of T-rex’s noggin, and the short arm length was more beneficial for slashing and cutting. In fact, estimates indicate the animal could inflict 4 cuts about 1 meter long (more than 3 feet) and several centimeters deep within mere seconds. #8 Fluffed Up Warm and fuzzy might not be the term that first comes to mind regarding dinosaurs … after all, the very name translates to ‘terrible lizard’. But many of the creatures did sport a coat of features … and that includes our friend Tyrannosaurus Rex, who’s getting a lot of face time here. But other species like Microraptor and Anchiornis did as well … and their discovery suggests that many other dino lineages could have had feathers as well. But it’s difficult to identify which ones had the trait. And that’s because it’s still unknown if dino feathers occurred at a later stage of evolution over multiple times… or if it was a trait passed down by the last common forefather of all dinosaurs.
