Concentration and memory difficulties are staple symptoms of many forms of dementia. It makes sense that when many people start to recognize these symptoms in themselves or with loves ones, the immediate question they have is “IS THIS DEMENTIA??! This is often a scary and anxiety provoking thought, but there may be another reason that is causing these symtptoms. PTSD (posttraumatic stress disorder), depression, anxiety, stress, certain medications and many other factors can cause memory and concentration issues. With people that have PTSD the cause is often related to their traumatic experience. We all only have some much cognitive capacity. If your mind is focused on your traumatic experience or on methods to avoid thinking, feeling or being exposed triggering stimuli your brain might tell you that remembering where your keys are is not that important. WHAT CAN YOU DO? 1. Talk to a professional if you are experiencing significant memory or concentration issues. 2. Ask your self: Why am I having memory issues? Is my mind of other things? I’m I anxious? Am I depressed, sad or angry? I’m I stressed out? These questions will help you and your clinician to work out a plan to help whether it is dementia or something else.
