Introduction to Urea Cycle Disorders

This is the first in a series of three videos that aim to educate patients, families, and healthcare professionals about treatment options for urea cycle disorders (UCDs), including treatment with diet and medicines as compared to liver transplantation. This first video in this series describes urea cycle disorders, talks about the effects of high ammonia levels, and discusses the treatment options of diet or medicines and liver transplant. The second video looks at factors people consider when deciding whether to pursue liver transplant. The third video discusses research undertaken to compare outcomes in a large group of patients with severe UCDs, some of whom were treated their whole life with diet and medicine and some who had liver transplants. This video series was produced through a collaboration between Children's National Hospital, the George Washington University School of Public Health, and the National Urea Cycle Disorders Foundation with funding from the Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute and support from the Urea Cycle Disorders Consortium.
