Finale Burberry catwalk show BURBERRY SURPRISE WITH NEW DESIGN DIRECTION Having been surprised on Monday when a flurry of protesters from People for Ethical Treatment of Animals, (PETA) stormed the Burberry boutique in downtown Milan to protest the company's use of fur, Burberry emerged with a few surprises of their own during their fall 2008 fashion show in Milan. In a break from traditional Burberry design directions - not a cream trench coat or black and white check was to be seen on the catwalk. The neutral palette that has been a cornerstone of the Burberry collection for years had quite obviously been cast aside - and in it's place a far darker beast, inspired by the military, said British designer Christopher Bailey. The new collection was a cross between medieval knights and motorbike chic. The traditional Burberry trench was remodelled with a tougher edge. Fabrics across the collection were harder, buttons bigger and belts thicker. Black, grey and dark blue parkers were big, unstructured, belted and worn over tight black leggings - don't be surprised to find padded anoraks at the top of every fashionistas must have list. Big buttoned trench coats came in snakeskin and soft napa leather, and were belted at the waist with thick heavy buckled belts. Belted knitted throws were voluminous - and worn over super short tunics and maxi length cable knit sweaters, wrapped in leather at the waist provided a new twist on an old classic. Each outfit was accessorised with elbow length leather gloves, thigh skimming leather boots and in some cases oversized leathers bags. Flesh was nowhere to be seen. Every inch of the models were wrapped in wool - and layered in soft leather. Colour had no place in Burberry's new collection now firmly rooted in chic, rather than "chav."
