Color Doppler test is a special type of ultrasound technique that uses high-frequency sound waves to check blood flow inside arteries. Also called Doppler ultrasound, it takes color pictures of arteries of different organs. With the help of this test, abnormalities in blood flow in arteries are detected. Color Doppler ultrasound also checks for conditions like blood clots, functioning of vein valves, heart valve defects, blockage in arteries, peripheral artery disease, narrowing of arteries and swelling of arteries. Why is color Doppler test done? Color Doppler test is done to check the functioning of blood vessels. It helps to: Monitor blood flow in different parts of the body (liver, kidneys, etc.) Identify blood clots in different veins of the legs and arms (deep vein thrombosis) Identify blockages, such as stenosis, plaques, and emboli It also helps to check a person’s fitness level for cardiac procedures such as angioplasty To detect the presence of aneurysms To check blood flow in grafts (new joints) after bypass surgery to determine if blood flow to the graft is normal or blocked To evaluate varicose veins Color Doppler is used in children to locate veins or arteries so that a catheter can be inserted. It also helps to detect congenital vascular malformations.
