Richard Charles Rodgers 1902 –1979. An American composer, known largely for his work in musical theatre. With 43 Broadway musicals and over 900 songs to his credit, Rodgers was one of the most significant American composers of the 20th century, and his compositions had a significant impact on popular music. He is best known for his songwriting partnerships with the lyricist Lorenz Hart, with whom he wrote several musicals throughout the 1920s and 1930s, including Pal Joey, A Connecticut Yankee, On Your Toes and Babes in Arms, and Oscar Hammerstein II, with whom he wrote musicals through the 1940s and 1950s such as Oklahoma!, Carousel, South Pacific, The King and I, and The Sound of Music. His collaborations with Hammerstein, in particular, are celebrated for bringing the Broadway musical to a new maturity by telling stories that were focused around characters and drama rather than the light-hearted entertainment that the genre was known for beforehand. Rodgers was the first person to win what is considered the top American entertainment awards in television, recording, movies, and Broadway – an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar, and a Tony Award — now known collectively as an EGOT. In addition, he was awarded a Pulitzer Prize, making him one of only two people to receive all five awards. In 1978, Rodgers was awarded The Kennedy Centre Honour for his lifetime achievement in the arts. 'Spring is here' is a 1938 popular song by Richard Rogers, the lyrics written by Lorenz Heart; It was made for the musical comedy 'I Married an Angel', introduced by Dennis King and Vivienne Segal On this video:- A stunning, haunting arrangement of this jazz standard involving the London Symphony Orchestra, no expense was spared for this song, with a lush orchestral background in the style of a beautiful classical tone poem. This lovely track was kindly offered to me by one of this channel's fans Mr. Tom Jackson, to whom I am greatly indebted for introducing me to Jeremy Lubbock's amazing work. Jeremy Lubbock - A British born 'behind the scenes maestro', gifted and self taught. He is both an arranger and composer. He is mainly known for his work on films :- The Colour Purple, Rocky 1V and Twister. Gary LeMel 1938 - 2019. Film music supervision expert, former head of Warner Bros. Music plus pop and jazz music singer singer. He supervised soundtracks on 'The Bodyguard', 'The Big Chill', 'Ghostbusters', 'Against all Odds' and 'St Elmo's Fire'. As a vocalist he recorded the occasional LP including 1994 'Romancing the Screen'. Gary sadly passed away last year, so perhaps we should dedicate this video to him with great love. The images attempt to do justice to such a finely balanced portrayal of Spring while experiencing the 'Winter of the soul'. Recording Info 'Spring is Here' - Richard Rogers arr.
