This video is based on a method discussed by Nicholas Sonder in the book SketchUp to Layout for Architecture. There are a couple different ways that you can utilize this method. The first, and probably the most utilized method, is by applying fog to elevation drawings in order to emphasize the areas that the elevation is meant to illustrate, while de-emphasizing the other areas of your elevation. In this case, we’ll use this home model from the Placemaker Building Bundle, which is a series of building models that are included for use as context models with a Placemaker license (more info in notes below). As you can see, part of this building that shows up in this elevation is set back. We’re going to use fog to visually indicate that the portion of this building that should be the focus of this plan is the area in the foreground. Set the distance of your fog back a bit in order to obscure that area enough that it doesn’t show through as well. You can also use it in a plan view to bring emphasis to a building on a site. For example, you can set your site layer view so that it has fog, then add another view for your building, which does not have fog. By combining the two, you can generate emphasis on your building while still displaying your site in Layout.
