In this tutorial I show you how to make your mic sound bad using SteelSeries Sonar. With this method you can make your microphone sound bad in Discord, games, and even on stream. Additionally, you can customize how bad your microphone sounds to suit your voice and still allow other people to understand you. The first step is to get the SteelSeries GG software, which includes Sonar. Once you have installed it you will need to sign in or create a SteelSeries account. This will allow you to use Sonar and adjust your settings. You will need to turn on the Sonar option if it isn’t already. When you first open the Sonar settings you will need to set your playback device to your listening device, and your microphone to the microphone you want to sound bad. Once done you can then select Mic from the top menu and adjust the equalizer to make your microphone sound bad. However, you also have access to presets which can be used to make your mic sound bad. One of the better options is the Walkie Talkie preset. Which as the name suggests, will make your microphone sound like a walkie talkie. This is particularly helpful as other people will still be able to understand you, even though your microphone sounds bad. Additionally, you can use this in game chat for fun. Additionally, you can adjust the equalizer points to customize how your voice sounds. When done correctly you can create some unique sounds for your voice, and make your microphone sound worse than any preset. When making presets you will want to favorite the best ones. Doing so will add it to your favorites bar, allowing you to switch between different presets quickly. After you have got your presets set up you will need to change the microphone being used in other applications. Rather than using your default microphone, you will instead need to change the input device to SteelSeries Sonar – Microphone. This is required for your microphone to sound bad. Otherwise, the presets and effects won’t be heard. Additionally, this allows you to have your microphone sound terrible in some applications while it sounds normal in others if you wish. Another reason why SteelSeries Sonar is a good option for making your microphone sound worse is because of the inbuilt noise cancellation options. With these you can clean up your audio to make the voice effect clearer and easier to understand. The Clearcast AI Noise Cancellation option is the easiest to set up, and can also help remove background noise in games, provided you select the SteelSeries Microphone input device. If you are trying to make your mic sound bad on Discord then you may need to turn off the “Automatically determine input volume” option in the Voice & Video settings.
