This video is the keynote address titled "Going a Different Way as Renewed Pilgrims of Hope" delivered by Cardinal Tagle at the 2nd Asian Mission Congress in Penang, Malaysia on November 27, 2025. Cardinal Tagle's Keynote Address Cardinal Tagle opened his address by thanking the FABC and bringing warm greetings from Pope Leo I 14th and the Dicastery for Evangelization [28:30]. He noted that he also gave the keynote address at the first Asian Mission Congress in 2006, and his main message remains the same: the Church must continue telling the story of Jesus [31:27]. He then structured his talk by inverting the title, focusing first on "Renewed Pilgrims of Hope" and then on "Going a Different Way." Part 1: Renewed Pilgrims of Hope Bearers of Jesus' Story To be authentic pilgrims of hope, we must be "bearers of the story of Jesus" and become living stories of hope through our speech, actions, and relationships [34:34]. The Meaning of Christian Hope Christian hope is clarified as not mere optimism, wishful thinking, or an escape from reality [35:39]. It is a theological virtue infused by God's grace, with God as its final object [36:44]. He suggests: "I hope in God that you recover," instead of simply, "I hope that you recover" [37:26]. Hope is "profoundly human and humanizing" and is described as building upon, purifying, and ordering human aspirations to happiness, perseverance, and authentic charity [38:04]. Questions for Self-Discernment To check if we are living the virtue of hope, we should ask: What gives me happiness? What is the source of my perseverance? And how pure is my love? [40:37] He stressed that true hope directs all these aspects toward "Jesus, his kingdom of love and justice," citing, "Seek ye first the kingdom of God and all this will be given unto you" [42:40]. Part 2: Going a Different Way The Pilgrimage of the Magi The title comes from the biblical text where the Magi, after adoring Jesus, "took a different way" (Matthew 2:12) to avoid Herod [32:50]. This is a "classic story of hope," revealing a pilgrimage of perseverance [44:07]. Contrast with Herod's Story The Magi's journey is a "pilgrimage of hope," which is intertwined with, and stands in contrast to, Herod's "pilgrimage of despair" [45:47]. Element of a Different Way: The Magi from the East He noted the significance of the Magi, who were Gentiles from the East, or "pagans," becoming the guides for the pilgrimage of hope [47:10]. Their journey was spurred on by reading "creation with some knowledge of scripture or God's word," particularly their reading of the stars and their knowledge of the prophecy concerning the new King of the Jews [48:08]. He points out that the Magi chose the way of hope from the very start, which was totally different from Herod's way of desperation [46:52].
