Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Oman, the final leg of his three-nation tour from December 15 to 18, is emerging as one of India’s most strategically significant engagements with a Gulf partner in recent years. While economics sits at the core of the visit, the agenda spans trade, defence cooperation and regional diplomacy. The centrepiece is the proposed India–Oman Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA). Negotiations began in late 2023 and have progressed rapidly, with approvals already secured from Oman’s Shura Council and the Indian Cabinet. While a formal signing has not been confirmed, multiple agreements linked to the CEPA are in advanced stages, indicating an announcement could be imminent. Beyond trade, defence ties are a major focus. Oman’s strategic location near the Strait of Hormuz and India’s access to the Duqm port have strengthened maritime cooperation. Muscat’s offer to supply spare parts for India’s Jaguar fighter jets adds a practical boost to defence ties.
