Sam Mendes and his new First World War Film 1917 took home the awards for Best Motion Picture and Best Director at the 2020 Golden Globes. Mendes grew up hearing stories about the First World War from his grandfather Alfred H. Mendes, a Lance Corporal who served as a messenger on the Western Front. Although the director’s new film 1917 is fictional, it draws from some of the stories told by his grandfather as well as first-person accounts of the war, including those held in the collections of IWM London.
