Do we need interpretability in quant finance? YES! Models are made to be used in decision making and often those making decisions want to understand how to make better decisions or take advantage of where others are missing the prediction. There is a range from not explainable to 100% explainable. Neither extreme is the case however we need to use every tool possible to get to a better understanding of a model. The 2007-2008 financial crisis is a perfect example of people using models they did not understand or did not communicate the weaknesses and assumptions very well.
