If you thought the Boss Katana had the affordable modelling amp game sewn up, the Blackstar IDX 50 has just walked in, straightened its collar, and said “hold my pint.” Get it at Sweetwater (US 🇺🇸) - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/7aPrBY Get it at Thomann (EU 🇪🇺) - https://thmn.to/thoprod/622488?offid=... Get it at Andertons (UK 🇬🇧) - https://clk.tradedoubler.com/click?p=... The Blackstar IDX 50 is the smaller sibling in Blackstar’s new IDX modelling range, and it’s clearly aiming straight at the Katana crowd. With a surprisingly authentic feel, a proper screen, onboard editing, and a ridiculous amount of effects, this thing wants to be the new go-to practice and small-gig amp. The question is whether it’s genuinely better, or just loudly saying so. The IDX 50 packs six amp voices, almost 40 effects, USB-C connectivity, Cab Rig output, power scaling, and Blackstar’s familiar ISF control. There’s a monochrome screen that actually makes sense, onboard editing for everything, and an audio interface that offers more than just a stereo pair. It weighs in at around 12 kg, making it a very portable grab-and-go option. It’s not flawless though. The preset banks are oddly limited from the front panel, and a few of the factory sounds are more “demo room” than “stage ready,” but there’s serious tone lurking underneath.
