Lent is a period of self-denial in preparation for the celebration of Easter. Lent is to remind us of how sin separates us from God and what it cost God to be reunited with us. The Lenten period is 40 days from Ash Wednesday to the Saturday before Easter. Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent when followers of Christ receive ashes. The ashes help remind us that we need to turn to God and show repentance. Lent is a time of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving to draw us closer to God. Lent is meant to be a time of repentance to prepare our hearts and minds for Good Friday and Easter. During Lent, many people decide to fast and give up some important things they love, including certain habits. What are you going to give up for lent? How about giving up bad behavior? How about fasting from bitterness? Fasting from using words that hurt? How about devoting more time to prayer? How about feasting on speech that heals? During the Lenten period, you may also give up things like chocolate and sweets or even using social media. How about helping those in need during Lent? These are ways to respond to God, who gave His Son for the world. The Lenten period continues to Good Friday, which is the day Christians remember the death of Jesus on the cross of Calvary. The name Good Friday is because the death of Jesus was a sacrifice so the world can receive God’s forgiveness and redemption. Lent ends on Easter Sunday, which is the most important day in the Christian calendar. On Easter Day, we celebrate that Jesus, who died on the cross on Good Friday, rose again after three days. Have a good Lent, may we fast from negatives and despair. May we feast on prayer and hope in Christ Jesus, amen.
