On episode 15 of the Queer Money® podcast, we talked with Adrian (not his real name) about how he and his husband used international surrogacy to have their son. Adrian talked extensively about the challenges that same-sex couples have with surrogacy and how they were able to navigate through some of those with the support of family, friends and determined planning ahead. He mentioned how same-sex couples who want to start a family face many challenges, not just in having children, but there are other issues such as obtaining multiple sets of birth certificates due to the different laws in varying countries. How laws differ from country to country and how that can inhibit the ability to have children or increase the costs. It was definitely an eye opener for the two of us when Adrian talked about the costs, how they planned ahead by creating the top three most likely scenarios and how his love of spreadsheets helped them plan ahead financially. Adrian’s story and journey highlighted the need for same-sex couples to do their homework to see what advantages there are to tap and that hiring the right help can make the process easier. As Adrian said, “If I were to do it over again, I would hire experts to help with the process.” We all know that experts can help, but there is a cost.
