Low-Budget Sci-Fi "Lost in Space" | THE ERNIE KOVACS SHOW (1956)

A comedian, actor, writer and conceptualist, Kovacs’ visually experimental comedic style was ground-breaking. He packed a lot into his 12 short years on television, beginning in 1950 on local NBC Philadelphia affiliate for a fashion show called PICK YOUR IDEAL. From there, he went on to host programs on all four national networks, CBS, NBC, ABC and even Dumont. Kovacs worked in early morning television, predating the TODAY SHOW by more than a year. Other shows and specials include: KOVACS ON MUSIC, IT’S TIME FOR ERNIE, ERNIE IN KOVACSLAND, KOVACS ON THE CORNER, THE ERNIE KOVACS SHOW, a 6-month stint hosting THE TONIGHT SHOW (then called TONIGHT and TONIGHT: AMERICA AFTER DARK), FESTIVAL OF MAGIC (NBC), the ABC game show TAKE A GOOD LOOK, and his last show, arguably his high water mark, the monthly half-hour specials, commonly referred to as THE ABC SPECIALS. LOW-BUDGET SCI-FI, also starring his wife, Edie Adams, is taken from THE ERNIE KOVACS SHOW (1956) on NBC. The year is 1956, Play-Doh is born, Eisenhower is elected president, and Elvis Presley tops the U.S. music charts. The 50s also gave rise to “Television’s Original Genius”, Ernie Kovacs (1919-1962).
