On May 25th at Motsu-ji, ‘Gokusui no En’ was held, which marked the arrival of early summer. Mr. Kojun Shirayama, Motsu-ji: This year marks the 28th Gokusui no En. It is an elegant Heian age entertainment in which a small vessel called ‘usho’ carrying a sake cup is floated down Yarimizu (Feeder Stream) and a waka (Japanese poem) is composed before it drifts in front of the poet. The sound of the ancient Japanese court music echoing throughout Motsu-ji garden enhances the atmosphere of Heian age. The participants wear outfits of Heian aristocrat such as traditional formal court dress or hunting suites for men and court clothing or traditional 12-layered kimono for women. Poets write waka using this year’s theme word ‘Hope’ while ancient Japanese court music is performed. Here is one of the poems composed during the event. ‘Looking at the pure flow of the feeder stream Hope this serenity continues forever’ After the event many visitors flocked around the participants. We asked Ms. Uebayashi who announced the poetry theme how she felt. Ms. Miyuki Uebayashi: I was so nervous because there were so many people. 12-layered kimono is very heavy, but I’m glad I was able to have a precious experience today. Gokusui no En was held at Yarimizu (feeder stream), one of the largest Heian age archeological ruins of the kind in Japan. Many visitors were intoxicated by the world of Heian recreated in modern days.
