We decided to take a little detour on our way to Fowler, Colorado from Kentucky. Driving through Kansas, especially central to western Kansas, can sometimes be very trying because of the constant wind. Seems no matter which way you go it's always a headwind you are facing. Also called Monument Rocks Natural Area and Monument Rocks Chalk Pyramids, it's located near Scott City, Kansas. It's about halfway between Oakley and Scott City Kansas along US 85. Follow the signs as it is well off the main road and you have to drive on fairly well groom dirt roads. Make sure you keep your speed up on the dirt road to help reduce vibration in your vehicle. It was doing between 35 to 40 mph. It was about 103 degrees the day we were there but it was also windy. Monument Rocks Natural Area includes pinnacles, small buttes, and spires of chalk of the Niobrara formation, and erosional remnants of sediments deposited in the ancient Kansas Sea of the Cretaceous time. The site is a rich source of fossils of cretaceous marine animals. Unlike science, I believe the marine fossils are the result of the Great Flood during the time of Noah. Designated as a Natural Area in 1968 it comprises 331 acres of land. Don’t expect your cellphone to work. It's pretty remote. Take plenty of liquids to drink as it's very dry.
