Holland Land Office Museum Guest Speaker Series: Joyce Thompson-Hovey, “Belva Lockwood”

The Holland Land Office Museum welcomed local historian and genealogist Joyce Thompson-Hovey on May 11, 2022 as part of our Guest Speaker Series. She spoke on a prominent women of New York State history, Belva Lockwood. Belva Lockwood was a member of the suffragette movement in New York, though she did not live to see the day that women could vote. She also became a well-known lawyer, even becoming the first women to argue a case before the Supreme Court. Mrs. Lockwood also ran for President of the United States in 1884 and 1888. She was born and grew up in Niagara County in Royalton. The Guest Speaker Series is made possible with funds from the Statewide Community Regrant Program, a regrant program of the New York State council on the Arts with the support of the office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature and administered by GO ART!
