Around 55 km from the popular town of Alibaug in Raigad district, Murud-Janjira fort is a very popular historic fort. The fort is around 90 feet in height and is regarded as an ancient architectural marvel. Malik Ambar a sultan in Abyssinian , With the permission of the king started building janjira fort for protecting the kholi samaj. It took 22 years ( 1118 - 1140 ) to construct janjira fort within 22 acres of an island. Word Janjira is originated from an arabic word Jazeera which means island as It was built on water It got its name Jaljazeera also known as Janjira. There are 2 freshwater reservoir in the fort. First lake is aprroximated to have 40 ft depth and the second lake has 60 ft depth. It holds the title of having the third biggest canon of India - Kalal Baagadi. The weight of the Kalal Baagadi is 22 tons and its range is upto 12 km. There are approximately 145 canons in the fort. The fort had 550 houses and 2500-3000 people used to lived there. The fort has 4 mosque and had a temple.
