(23 Sep 1997) T/I: 10:07:40 Chinese Premier Li Peng opened in Hong Kong on Tuesday (23/9) the annual IMF-World Bank meetings, saying that China has delivered on its promise to give Hong Kong a high degree of autonomy. Li also reaffirmed China's commitment to the modernist drive and policy of economic reform enshrined by the late Chinese idealogue Deng Xiaoping. The IMF-World Bank meetings come hard on the heels of the 15th National Party Congress in China, during which President Jiang Zemin committed the Communist Party to liberalising state enterprises. Police barred demonstrators from presenting a letter to Li Peng in which they attacked his role in the 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre in Beijing and called on him to step down.
