Dr. Frankle: This is the reverse shoulder replacement I developed. Reverse shoulder replacement is a relatively new procedure that has been in the United States since 1998. Which is when I performed the first one here in Tampa. There's a socket here and a ball here. The clinical problem that this address is the patient who has had a massive rotator cuff tear and is unable to raise their arm.Male Respondent: There was about a three-inch tear in the rotator cuff and it was continuously getting worse. Female Respondent:I couldn't move at all I was in such pain. Dr. Frankle: Before we really had no good answer that would reliably improve their function.Male Respondent: You can’t play golf with a shoulder in that condition.Female Respondent: I couldn't do anything hardly. I couldn't even feed myself. Dr. Frankle: (01:00) This provides stability that is lost in patients that have a deficient rotator cup. Male Respondent:I had surgery four years ago and honestly my arm is better than it was when I was 20-years old.Female Respondent: It’s just wonderful to be able to do things again.Dr. Frankle: Really the goal of this was to provide an answer for patients who didn’t have it and we solved that. Were encouraged these people are certainly improved. I have visitors probably about once a week from around the world because this has become such a really effective means to treat people that there's a great desire to become educated. We've been able to take a problem that actually existed in humanity that had no solution and have been able to improve upon it. Now people really have an option. Female Respondent: I’m doing wonderful now. Couldn’t ask for any better.Male Respondent: I hope to be able to play for another 20 years. (02:00)
