Vaping among teenagers is rising exponentially in New Zealand, posing challenges to the nation's goal of becoming smoke-free by 2025. While vaping is promoted as a less harmful alternative for adult smokers, its appeal to teenagers has surged due to colorful flavors and easy accessibility. Despite the ban on selling vapes to under 18s, teens still manage to obtain them from older peers and shops that don't enforce age checks. Data from last year indicated a tripling of regular teenage vapers between 2019 and 2021. The government has introduced new regulations, such as banning most disposable vapes and limiting new vape shops near schools, but the wide variety of flavors remains unregulated. Critics like Marnie Wilton, co-founder of Vape-Free Kids NZ, argue that the regulations fall short and fail to adequately protect children from vaping's allure. While vaping has helped some adult smokers quit, the challenge lies in balancing the reduction of smoking rates with the prevention of youth vaping.
